DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On December 28, 1988, hundreds of witnesses across the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico near Cabo Rojo and Laguna Cartagena reported a massive triangular or boomerang-shaped craft flying at low altitude. Puerto Rico police received multiple calls and dispatched officers. Officers observed the craft at close range, describing it as approximately 200 feet across with a row of large white lights on its leading edge and a red central light. US Customs Service agents at the area observed the craft. FAA control tower personnel at Rafael Hernández Airport tracked an anomalous return. Multiple witnesses reported the craft descending toward the Laguna Cartagena, a shallow lake, and apparently entering the water. Some witnesses reported military jets and helicopters arriving to the area shortly after the craft's descent. The incident was investigated by Puerto Rico-based researchers including Jorge Martín, who documented hundreds of witness accounts over subsequent years. The FAA's San Juan facility confirmed the anomalous radar contact. Puerto Rico police filed official incident reports. The region of Cabo Rojo became the site of sustained UAP activity through the early 1990s, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Laguna Cartagena refuge staff documenting repeated observations. The case is referenced in both FAA records and multiple Puerto Rico government agency reports.
