AT A GLANCE

Beginning in November 1987, a series of UAP incidents occurred over Gulf Breeze, Florida. Multiple photographs were taken by local contractor Ed Walters and later by ~130 other independent witnesses. FAA radar confirmed unidentified targets over the Gulf of Mexico. Military pilots reported visual contacts. MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) investigators, a medical doctor, and a USAF physician analyzed the physical effects reported by primary witness Walters.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On November 11, 1987, Gulf Breeze, Florida contractor Ed Walters photographed a craft he described as approaching his home. Over the following months Walters photographed the craft on multiple occasions and reported physical symptoms during encounters including a blue beam directed at him that temporarily paralyzed him and caused nausea. He reported the beam lifted him briefly off the ground. Simultaneously, approximately 130 other Gulf Breeze residents independently reported and in many cases photographed similar craft. The Gulf Breeze Sentinel newspaper documented community reports. FAA radar facilities at Pensacola and Eglin AFB (10 miles from Gulf Breeze) confirmed unidentified radar targets in the area on multiple dates corresponding to visual reports. Military pilots at Eglin AFB filed incident reports. MUFON sent an investigation team. A University of Western Florida computer analyst conducted photographic analysis and concluded the images showed a real, physical object. USAF physicians and a civilian physician evaluated Walters' reported physical symptoms. The Walters' photographs were submitted to the Fund for UFO Research, which conducted a scientific analysis. While Walters became controversial, the broader wave of 130 independent witnesses and FAA radar confirmations remained unexplained. The case files are held by MUFON and referenced in FAA records.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • FAA radar at Pensacola and Eglin AFB confirmed unidentified targets on multiple dates

JAL Flight 1628 — FAA Radar Confirmation, Alaska

Northeastern Alaska, USA — Anchorage ARTCC airspace

Japan Air Lines Flight 1628, a Boeing 747 cargo flight from Paris to Tokyo, encountered two objects and then a massive third object — estimated at the size of two aircraft carriers — over Alaska for approximately 50 minutes. FAA Anchorage Center radar confirmed an unidentified return. USAF Elmendorf AFB radar also briefly confirmed contact. The FAA investigated and Captain Terauchi gave a formal statement. The investigation is one of the most thoroughly documented FAA radar-visual cases.

O'Hare International Airport — Disc Over Gate C17

O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, Illinois, USA

A metallic disc-shaped object was observed hovering silently over Gate C17 at O'Hare International Airport by over a dozen United Airlines employees and flight crew. The FAA initially denied radar contact; a Freedom of Information Act release revealed internal FAA discussion of the event. The object punched a clear circular hole through the overcast cloud layer upon departure.
