AT A GLANCE

A metallic disc hovered over the US Army Yuma Proving Ground weapons test range during live-fire testing operations. Test engineers and range safety personnel observed the craft for 20 minutes. Optical tracking instruments trained on projectile trajectories accidentally captured images of the disc. Army intelligence was notified. The encounter caused a temporary suspension of testing operations as range safety protocols required an unknown aircraft halt.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On June 23, 1988, during active live-fire testing operations at the US Army Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona — one of the Army's primary weapons testing facilities — a metallic disc hovered over the test range. US Army test engineers and range safety personnel observed the craft for 20 minutes. The disc's presence directly over an active test range with live fire operations in progress triggered mandatory range safety protocols requiring all test firing to halt while an unknown aircraft was in the range airspace. The disc was stationary for the majority of the 20-minute observation. Optical tracking instruments normally used to track projectile trajectories were slewed to capture imagery of the disc. Army intelligence was notified and an incident report was filed. The Yuma encounter is notable for occurring directly over an active weapons test range — causing actual interruption of Army weapons testing operations — and for the inadvertent capture of imagery by precision range instrumentation.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Over active live-fire test range — caused mandatory test halt
  • Precision range tracking instruments inadvertently captured imagery
  • Army Yuma Proving Ground — primary weapons testing facility
  • Army intelligence notified with incident report
  • Test operations suspended per range safety protocols
  • 20-minute stationary hover over active weapons test area

Coyne Helicopter Incident — Army Reserve Near-Collision 1973

Mansfield, Ohio

A US Army Reserve UH-1 Huey helicopter crew of four experienced a near-collision with a large metallic object over Ohio. A green beam from the craft filled the cockpit and the helicopter began rising despite the pilot pushing the collective to full-down. The crew was pulled from 2000 feet to 3800 feet involuntarily. Ground witnesses in a car below also observed the encounter. The incident was formally investigated by the Center for UFO Studies and submitted to the AIAA.

Vandenberg Titan II — UAP Disables ICBM Test 1964

Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

During a live Titan II ICBM test launch at Vandenberg AFB, tracking cameras documented an unidentified disc-shaped object performing maneuvers around the test missile. The object appeared to disable the test vehicle mid-flight. USAF security personnel were placed on alert and recovered the documentation. The incident occurred at one of the most secured sites in the US nuclear deterrent infrastructure. The documentation was classified above Top Secret.
