AT A GLANCE

A Wyoming State Patrol officer and multiple civilian witnesses observed a metallic disc performing low-altitude maneuvers near Cody, Wyoming. The officer filed a formal report with the State Patrol and the USAF. The object was described as having a domed top with a rotating band around its middle, hovering silently before departing at high speed toward the Yellowstone region. The case contributed to the Project Blue Book caseload from the Yellowstone-Wyoming area during the mid-1960s activity cluster.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On August 3, 1964, a Wyoming State Patrol officer on patrol near Cody, Wyoming observed a metallic disc-shaped object hovering at approximately 200 feet above the prairie outside the city. The officer stopped his vehicle and observed the craft for approximately six minutes. The object was described as having a silver metallic upper dome with a flange around its middle that appeared to rotate. Multiple civilian motorists also stopped and observed the object. The craft hovered silently, made a slow horizontal movement, then accelerated vertically and horizontally at extreme speed in the direction of Yellowstone National Park. The officer filed an immediate formal report with the Wyoming State Patrol and contacted the nearest USAF installation. Project Blue Book received the report and interviewed the officer. The event occurred during a period of concentrated UAP activity across the Wyoming-Montana-Idaho corridor in 1964, including the Zamora Socorro event in April of the same year. The Cody report was classified as 'insufficient data' by Blue Book despite the officer's detailed account.

Edwards AFB — Test Pilots and Tower Report Disc

Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA

Edwards AFB control tower controllers and multiple F-104 Starfighter test pilots observed a metallic disc maneuvering over the base at high altitude. The object was tracked visually by tower personnel and by pilots in flight. Project Blue Book investigated and logged the case as 'unidentified.' The encounter is notable for occurring at the USAF's primary aircraft test facility with multiple trained military aviators as witnesses.

Ann Arbor / Dexter-Hillsdale Wave — USAF Swamp Gas Controversy

Dexter and Hillsdale, Michigan, USA

Over two nights in Michigan, approximately 100 witnesses including county sheriffs' deputies and a civil defense director observed disc-shaped craft at low altitude. USAF Project Blue Book sent Dr. J. Allen Hynek to investigate. Hynek's official explanation — 'swamp gas' — caused national ridicule and congressional outrage, directly triggering the Condon Committee investigation and Congressman Gerald Ford's formal congressional inquiry.

Rogue River — USAF Intelligence Officer Daylight Observation

Rogue River, Oregon, USA

A USAF Intelligence officer observed a disc-shaped object through binoculars in full daylight over the Rogue River, Oregon. The officer filed a formal Project Blue Book report. His training in aircraft identification and position as an intelligence officer made the report one of the most credentialed in the early Blue Book record. The object was estimated at 50 feet in diameter, highly reflective, and departed at extreme speed.
