AT A GLANCE

Over two nights in Michigan, approximately 100 witnesses including county sheriffs' deputies and a civil defense director observed disc-shaped craft at low altitude. USAF Project Blue Book sent Dr. J. Allen Hynek to investigate. Hynek's official explanation — 'swamp gas' — caused national ridicule and congressional outrage, directly triggering the Condon Committee investigation and Congressman Gerald Ford's formal congressional inquiry.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the nights of March 20–21, 1966, a wave of UAP sightings swept Michigan. On March 20, Frank Mannor and his son observed a craft low over a swamp near Dexter; Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies responding to the call also observed luminous objects in the area. The following night, 87 students at Hillsdale College and the college's civil defense director William Van Horn observed a glowing object over a swampy field adjacent to the campus for nearly four hours. The object was described as flat and oval with a bright center, which wobbled and then glided away when police arrived. Across both nights, state police and sheriff's deputies filed formal reports. USAF Project Blue Book dispatched Dr. J. Allen Hynek — its scientific consultant — to investigate. Hynek interviewed witnesses and examined the site. His official explanation, offered at a press conference, attributed the sightings to 'marsh gas' (swamp gas) from decomposing organic matter in the wetlands. The explanation was immediately ridiculed by witnesses and press. Congressman Gerald Ford of Michigan formally demanded a congressional investigation. The backlash led to the formation of the Condon Committee at the University of Colorado (1966–1968), funded by the USAF to provide an independent scientific review of UAP evidence. Hynek himself later publicly expressed regret over the swamp gas explanation and became one of the most prominent scientific advocates for systematic UAP research.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies directly observed craft — official sworn reports filed
  • 87 Hillsdale College students and civil defense director observed object for ~4 hours
  • USAF Dr. J. Allen Hynek's 'swamp gas' explanation triggered national controversy and congressional inquiry
  • Congressman Gerald Ford formally demanded congressional investigation after the incident
  • Directly triggered formation of the Condon Committee (USAF-funded University of Colorado study, 1966–1968)
  • Hynek later publicly disavowed his official explanation — became a prominent UAP research advocate

Edwards AFB — Test Pilots and Tower Report Disc

Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA

Edwards AFB control tower controllers and multiple F-104 Starfighter test pilots observed a metallic disc maneuvering over the base at high altitude. The object was tracked visually by tower personnel and by pilots in flight. Project Blue Book investigated and logged the case as 'unidentified.' The encounter is notable for occurring at the USAF's primary aircraft test facility with multiple trained military aviators as witnesses.

Rogue River — USAF Intelligence Officer Daylight Observation

Rogue River, Oregon, USA

A USAF Intelligence officer observed a disc-shaped object through binoculars in full daylight over the Rogue River, Oregon. The officer filed a formal Project Blue Book report. His training in aircraft identification and position as an intelligence officer made the report one of the most credentialed in the early Blue Book record. The object was estimated at 50 feet in diameter, highly reflective, and departed at extreme speed.

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.
