AT A GLANCE

Multiple Xenia police officers and Greene County deputies observed a low disc over the city during the 1973 fall wave. Wright-Patterson AFB radar — just 10 miles away — confirmed the contact. The proximity to WPAFB gave the incident unusual significance in Blue Book successor program files.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On October 17, 1973, during the remarkable fall wave that produced the Pascagoula abduction and Coyne helicopter encounters, multiple Xenia Police Department officers and Greene County Sheriff's deputies observed a disc-shaped craft hovering and maneuvering at low altitude over Xenia, Ohio. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base — home of Foreign Technology Division and the Air Force's most sensitive aerospace intelligence programs — lies only 10 miles from Xenia. WPAFB radar confirmed the contact. The proximity prompted WPAFB duty officers to take an unusual personal interest, with base intelligence personnel arriving on scene before the incident concluded. The FBI's Columbus field office also investigated at the request of local law enforcement. The case was cross-referenced in post-Blue Book successor program files given the extreme proximity to WPAFB and the fact that base radar had confirmed the contact. The 1973 fall wave produced more police officer sightings across the US than any comparable period, with over 100 law enforcement UAP reports filed in October alone.
