AT A GLANCE

Two US Navy patrol aircraft and Kodiak Naval Air Station radar tracked a large metallic disc performing high-speed maneuvers over the strategic Alaskan naval base. The disc demonstrated the ability to reverse direction without deceleration. The commanding officer filed an intelligence report to the Office of Naval Intelligence. The FBI was copied on the report — it appears in the FBI Vault UAP files as one of Alaska's earliest naval encounters.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On January 22, 1950, Kodiak Naval Air Station in Alaska became the site of a significant early Cold War UAP encounter when radar operators detected an unidentified contact performing high-speed maneuvers over the strategically vital base. Two Navy PBY patrol aircraft were airborne and crews visually acquired a large metallic disc executing maneuvers that included instantaneous direction reversals without any deceleration profile. The disc performed multiple high-speed circuits of the base before departing. The commanding officer of Kodiak NAS filed a formal intelligence report to the Office of Naval Intelligence. Consistent with Cold War practice for reports of unknown aerial contacts over military installations, the FBI was copied on the report — and the document subsequently appeared in the FBI Vault's UAP file collection, one of the earliest documented naval UAP encounters in Alaskan airspace. The technical detail of direction reversal without deceleration was highlighted in the intelligence report as inconsistent with any known aircraft.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Direction reversal without deceleration — noted in intelligence report
  • Two Navy aircraft plus ground radar — triple confirmation
  • ONI formally notified — strategic facility report
  • FBI Vault file — appears in declassified FBI records
  • Kodiak — strategic Alaska naval base location
  • One of earliest documented Cold War Alaskan UAP reports

Kenneth Arnold Flying Saucer Formation

Mount Rainier, Washington, USA

Private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported nine crescent-shaped objects flying in formation near Mount Rainier at an estimated 1,700 mph — far exceeding any known aircraft of the era. His account coined the term 'flying saucer' and triggered the first formal FBI and Army Air Force investigation.

Ukiah California Formation 1949

Ukiah, Mendocino County, California

A formation of seven disc-shaped objects was observed by a United Airlines pilot and confirmed by Civil Aeronautics Authority tower operators at Ukiah. Forty ground witnesses independently reported the event. The FBI Ukiah field office filed an official investigation report to J. Edgar Hoover.

Mount Rainier Formation Intercept Attempt 1950

Mount Rainier, Washington State

Three years after Kenneth Arnold's first modern sighting near the same mountain, a USAF pilot and multiple airline crews observed a nine-disc formation in the same corridor. The FBI Seattle office investigated and filed a classified duplicate of the Arnold-era reports, noting the geographic persistence of the phenomenon.
