AT A GLANCE

An Army Reserve UH-1 helicopter crew of four had a near-collision with a large grey metallic object over Mansfield, Ohio. The object stopped the helicopter's controlled descent and the aircraft inexplicably climbed 2,000 feet with no crew input. The incident is regarded as one of the most credible military UAP cases in the official record due to the four-person trained military crew and corroborating ground witnesses.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the night of October 18, 1973, Army Reserve Captain Lawrence Coyne was flying a UH-1 helicopter at 2,500 feet near Mansfield, Ohio. Sergeant Yanacsek observed a red light approaching from the east at high speed. Coyne pushed the collective down to descend and avoid collision, but the object — described as approximately 60 feet long, gray metallic, with a green spotlight beam — stopped and hovered directly over the helicopter. During this period the altimeter showed the aircraft climbing from 1,700 to 3,500 feet with no crew input and the collective still in full-down descent position. The object departed to the west at high speed. Coyne filed an official Army report, and the crew's account was corroborated by a family of five ground witnesses near Mansfield who also observed the green beam and the helicopter. The case was investigated by the Center for UFO Studies and presented to the United Nations in 1978. It remains listed as 'unidentified' in official Army records and is frequently cited as one of the most credible military UAP encounters due to the involuntary altitude gain with collective in descent position.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • UH-1 helicopter gained 2,000 ft altitude with collective in full-down position
  • ~60 ft grey metallic object hovered directly overhead
  • Green spotlight beam directed at aircraft from object
  • Four Army Reserve crew members as witnesses — all filed official reports
  • Corroborated by five independent ground witnesses observing green beam
  • Presented to the United Nations Committee on Outer Space (1978)

Gimbal UAP — Rotating Object Against the Wind

U.S. East Coast (Atlantic), ~100 miles offshore

An F/A-18 Super Hornet ATFLIR pod captured a disc-shaped object visibly rotating against the direction of wind at 25,000 feet. The object moved into the prevailing wind and appeared to rotate continuously with no visible means of propulsion. DoD officially released the FLIR footage in 2020; AARO lists it as unresolved.
