AT A GLANCE

Multiple unidentified craft were observed and tracked on radar over the top-secret Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia between 1954 and 1956. The range housed joint Australian-British-American missile testing programs. Australian Dept of Air SECRET reports, later declassified, document RAAF radar tracking of objects at extreme altitudes performing maneuvers beyond any known aircraft. British Ministry of Supply personnel and US Army observers filed corroborating reports.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Woomera, established as a joint Australian-British rocket and weapons testing facility in 1947, became the site of multiple formally documented UAP incidents beginning in 1954. The facility housed classified missile programs including Operation Antler (British nuclear tests), Blue Streak missile development, and US Army ballistic missile research. Starting in March 1954, RAAF radar operators at Woomera tracked multiple unidentified targets at altitudes in excess of 50,000 feet performing maneuvers at speeds and with turning radii beyond any known aircraft of the era. Visual observations were made from the ground by RAAF personnel and scientists from the British Ministry of Supply. US Army observers from the Long Range Proving Ground detachment also filed reports. The Australian Department of Air classified the reports SECRET under the joint agreement with Britain and the United States. Documents were later obtained by researcher Bill Chalker through Australia's Freedom of Information Act. The released files show that RAAF Air Technical Intelligence investigated the incidents and could not identify the objects as any friendly nation's experimental aircraft. The joint British-Australian nature of the facility and the presence of US Army personnel means the incident files are distributed across three national archives: Australian Archives, UK National Archives (DEFE series), and NARA.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • RAAF radar tracked targets at 50,000+ ft performing maneuvers beyond any known 1954 aircraft
  • Witnessed by British Ministry of Supply scientists and US Army observers on-site
  • Australian Dept of Air SECRET reports later released under Australian FOI Act
  • RAAF Air Technical Intelligence investigated — could not identify objects as any known aircraft
  • Incident files distributed across Australian Archives, UK National Archives (DEFE), and NARA
  • Facility housed classified nuclear and ballistic missile programs — high-security restricted airspace

Westall School UAP — 200 Witnesses, Australian Dept of Air

Westall High School, Clayton South, Victoria, Australia

Approximately 200 school students and teachers observed a disc-shaped craft descend, land briefly in a field adjacent to Westall High School, and then depart at high speed. Five smaller craft were also observed. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) responded and reportedly confiscated grass samples and directed witnesses not to speak about the incident. The Australian Dept of Air classified the investigation. Students and teachers report being told to sign confidentiality agreements.

Gosford, Australia — New South Wales Police Multiple Reports

Gosford, New South Wales, Australia

Beginning in late January 1996, a wave of UAP sightings swept the Central Coast of New South Wales around Gosford, Australia. New South Wales Police officers filed multiple formal incident reports. Naval Air Station Nowra radar operators reported anomalous contacts. The Australian Dept of Defence reviewed the reports. Local police took hundreds of public reports. The wave is documented in official NSW Police records and referenced in Australian parliamentary questions.

French Polynesia Nuclear Test Site UAP 1988

Mururoa Atoll, French Polynesia

A large disc-shaped object was tracked over the Mururoa nuclear test atoll by multiple intelligence assets during a period of French nuclear testing. US monitoring stations and Australian signals intelligence confirmed the contact. The object appeared to enter the restricted airspace coinciding with scheduled test detonations.
