AT A GLANCE

A large fireball tracked across six US states and Canada descended into woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. Civilians who reached the impact site before military cordoned the area described an acorn-shaped metallic object approximately the size of a Volkswagen Beetle with a raised band of hieroglyphic-like markings around its base. The US Army arrived in force and removed the object on a flatbed truck. Official explanation: 'nothing found.' NASA was later forced via FOIA to search its records.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On December 9, 1965, a large fireball was observed by thousands of witnesses across six US states and Ontario, Canada. Sonic booms were heard and a trail of debris was reported. Triangulation placed the impact zone in woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. Local firefighters and civilians who arrived at the site before the military described an acorn-shaped metallic object approximately the size of a Volkswagen Beetle embedded in the soil at a slight angle, with a raised band running around its base inscribed with markings described as hieroglyphic or runic in character. The US Army arrived in force within hours, cordoned the entire area, and ordered civilians back. Witnesses described Army personnel loading the object onto a flatbed truck covered with a tarpaulin and driving it away, with military trucks escorting the convoy. Official military and NASA statements claimed 'nothing was found.' Decades later, investigative journalist Leslie Kean sued NASA under FOIA for its Kecksburg records; NASA was ordered by a federal court to search its holdings, which it did, finding only administrative records. The Kecksburg incident remains one of the most credible potential craft-recovery events in the US record.

Chiles-Whitted Eastern Airlines Rocket Object

Montgomery, Alabama, USA

Two experienced Eastern Airlines captains reported a cigar-shaped, double-decked object with a blazing exhaust that passed within 700 feet of their DC-3 at 700 mph over Montgomery, Alabama. Project Sign analysts concluded it was the 'most credible' UAP report of 1948 and drafted a classified estimate attributing it to extraterrestrial origin.

Lonnie Zamora Socorro — Egg-Shaped Craft Landing 1964

Socorro, New Mexico

Project Blue Book's most credible unresolved case. Socorro police officer Lonnie Zamora observed an egg-shaped craft on legs with two figures in white coveralls near a desert arroyo. The craft departed with a roar and flame, leaving behind four physical landing impressions and charred vegetation. FBI and Army investigators found the physical evidence compelling. Project Blue Book director Hynek called it the strongest physical evidence case in the entire Blue Book record.
