AT A GLANCE

Two experienced Eastern Airlines captains reported a cigar-shaped, double-decked object with a blazing exhaust that passed within 700 feet of their DC-3 at 700 mph over Montgomery, Alabama. Project Sign analysts concluded it was the 'most credible' UAP report of 1948 and drafted a classified estimate attributing it to extraterrestrial origin.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the night of July 23, 1948, Eastern Airlines Flight 576, a DC-3 on approach to Montgomery, Alabama, was passed by a large, torpedo-shaped object at close range. Captain Clarence Chiles and First Officer John Whitted both observed a wingless, rocket-shaped craft approximately 100 feet long with two rows of bright windows along its fuselage. A deep blue exhaust flame trailed from the rear. The object passed within an estimated 700 feet at roughly 700 mph, pulling up sharply and disappearing into clouds. One passenger also reported seeing a bright flash. Both pilots were experienced WWII veterans with thousands of flight hours. Project Sign, then operating under SECRET classification, analyzed the case extensively. The investigation team drafted 'Estimate of the Situation' — a classified document that concluded the best explanation for this and other cases was extraterrestrial origin. Air Force Chief of Staff General Hoyt Vandenberg rejected the estimate and ordered it burned, but copies survived in the Project Blue Book files declassified in the 1970s.

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.

Sandia — Armed Forces Special Weapons Program Orb Encounters

Sandia Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Newly declassified Armed Forces Special Weapons Program records document 209 separate UAP sightings at Sandia Base, New Mexico — the nation's primary nuclear weapons facility — between 1948 and 1950. Witnesses, primarily military personnel, described orbs that performed high-speed maneuvers and, in several cases, appeared to explode. The proximity to classified nuclear infrastructure was assessed as a national security concern. The files are part of the May 2026 Pentagon archive release.
