AT A GLANCE

The Exeter encounter of September 1965 involved two police officers and a civilian observing a massive low-altitude disc over New Hampshire farmland for nearly an hour. Officer Bertrand had earlier encountered a woman on the highway who told him she had been chased by a similar red-glowing object. Two Pease Air Force Base jets were dispatched to investigate. The USAF responded to Congressional inquiry about the case — one of very few UAP events to generate an official USAF letter to Congress.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

In the early hours of September 3, 1965, 18-year-old Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking on Route 150 near Exeter, New Hampshire when a huge silent craft with five bright red lights appeared from behind trees, tilting and wobbling as it hovered at approximately 50 feet above the field. Muscarello ran to a nearby house and called police. Officer Eugene Bertrand was dispatched — he had himself earlier encountered a woman on the highway who told him a UFO had chased her car. Bertrand arrived at the field and both he and Muscarello watched the craft maneuver overhead for approximately 45 minutes. Bertrand radioed for backup and Officer David Hunt arrived in time to observe the object before it departed. Horses and dogs in the area were agitated throughout. Two jets from Pease AFB were scrambled in response. Project Blue Book interviewed all witnesses and initially classified the case as 'insufficient data.' When the investigator's classification was challenged by the witnesses and a New Hampshire congressman, the Air Force sent official letters to both Muscarello and Bertrand's police chief — one of the very few cases to generate formal USAF correspondence about a specific UAP event in the public record.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Two active-duty police officers plus civilian witness — all gave consistent reports
  • 45-minute close encounter at 50 feet altitude over New Hampshire farmland
  • Pease AFB jets scrambled in response — military confirmation of significance
  • USAF sent official letters to witnesses and police chief — extremely rare acknowledgment
  • Bertrand had prior corroborating witness (woman chased by craft same night)
  • Case reviewed for Congressional inquiry — forced USAF to formally respond

Edwards AFB — Test Pilots and Tower Report Disc

Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA

Edwards AFB control tower controllers and multiple F-104 Starfighter test pilots observed a metallic disc maneuvering over the base at high altitude. The object was tracked visually by tower personnel and by pilots in flight. Project Blue Book investigated and logged the case as 'unidentified.' The encounter is notable for occurring at the USAF's primary aircraft test facility with multiple trained military aviators as witnesses.
