AT A GLANCE

The Phoenix Lights involved two distinct events: a massive V-formation over Nevada and Arizona observed by thousands, and stationary lights over Phoenix. The Arizona Governor initially mocked the event but years later admitted he personally witnessed the first formation and was left with no explanation.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the night of March 13, 1997, tens of thousands of Arizonans observed two distinct UAP events. The first was a massive V-formation of lights stretching a mile or more that moved silently southward from Nevada through Arizona over several hours, observed by witnesses in Henderson, Prescott, Phoenix, and Tucson. The second was a series of stationary amber lights appearing over the Phoenix area later in the evening. Arizona Governor Fife Symington initially staged a press conference where an aide dressed as an alien to mock the reports. However, in 2007 Symington publicly recanted, stating he himself had observed the first formation flying over Prescott and found it inexplicable. He stated: 'I'm a pilot and I know just about every aircraft there is and this was nothing like that.' Luke Air Force Base and Davis-Monthan AFB both denied any knowledge of the craft. Flares were attributed to the second set of lights, but the first formation — observed by thousands over hours across 300 miles — has never been officially explained.

Nevada Triangle Overflight Pattern 1990

Nevada, Interstate 15 corridor

Beginning in late 1990, a sustained pattern of large triangular craft sightings along Nevada's Interstate 15 corridor and near the Nevada Test Site emerged. Rachel, Nevada — adjacent to Area 51 — became a hub for witnesses. Highway Patrol logs documented hundreds of sightings over months.

Hudson Valley Boomerang Wave 1982-1986

Hudson Valley, New York

Over 5,000 witnesses across New York's Hudson Valley reported a massive boomerang or V-shaped craft between 1982 and 1986. The object repeatedly hovered over densely populated suburban areas at low altitude with no sound. Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant security filed official reports on multiple occasions. FAA's Albany center received reports. Researchers J. Allen Hynek and Phil Imbrogno conducted ground-level investigation.
