DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

In late 1977, mass civilian sightings of luminous craft over the Amazon region of northern Brazil prompted the Brazilian Air Force to deploy a secret investigation team under the authority of First Army Operational Command. The operation — code-named Operação Prato (Operation Saucer) — was led by Captain (later Colonel) Uyrangê Hollanda and deployed to the Maranhão and Pará states. The team set up photographic and observation equipment and documented hundreds of incidents. The craft were described as disc-shaped and cylindrical, capable of hovering at low altitude and emitting focused beams of light. Residents who were struck by beams reported physical symptoms including burns, hair loss, and temporary paralysis. Local doctors documented the injuries. The Brazilian Navy also participated in portions of the investigation. The Air Force team photographed multiple craft. The complete Operation Saucer report was classified SECRET. Portions of the file were declassified in 1997–2004 and released by the Brazilian Air Force. Before his death, Colonel Hollanda gave a lengthy interview stating the investigation team encountered genuine phenomena, observed craft that were clearly structured and under intelligent control, and that the Air Force concluded the objects were real and of unknown origin. Hollanda's interview was recorded on video. The declassified Brazilian Air Force files are among the most extensive government operational UAP documentation from any Latin American military.
