AT A GLANCE

A disc-shaped craft was photographed by commercial diver and photographer Almiro Baraúna from the deck of the Brazilian Navy vessel Almirante Saldanha off Trindade Island. Approximately 40 Navy personnel witnessed the object. The Brazilian Navy officially released the photographs and Brazilian President Kubitschek confirmed their authenticity. The photographs were technically analyzed for decades and are among the most extensively examined UAP images in the official record.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On January 16, 1958, the Brazilian Navy vessel Almirante Saldanha was anchored off Trindade Island in the South Atlantic on an International Geophysical Year mission. Commercial photographer and diver Almiro Baraúna was aboard when approximately 40 Navy crew members observed a Saturn-shaped disc — a flattened disc with a prominent equatorial ring — fly over the island. Baraúna captured four photographs with his Rolleiflex camera before the object departed at speed into the ocean horizon. The photographs were developed aboard the ship under Naval officer supervision. Brazilian Navy Chief of Staff Admiralty official analysis confirmed the photographs were unaltered. Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek personally authorized the public release of the photographs and stated they were genuine military documents. The US Air Force Project Blue Book, the Brazilian Air Force, and multiple independent photographic analysts examined the images. The photographs show a disc with the distinctive ringed profile at four positions during its approach and departure. The Condon Committee (1969) examined the photographs and its analysis was inconclusive — some analysts found no evidence of hoax while others proposed scale model possibilities. The Brazilian government's official position has remained consistent: the photographs are authentic military documentation of an unidentified craft observed by approximately 40 Navy witnesses.

Westall High School, Clayton South, Victoria, Australia

Approximately 200 school students and teachers observed a disc-shaped craft descend, land briefly in a field adjacent to Westall High School, and then depart at high speed. Five smaller craft were also observed. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) responded and reportedly confiscated grass samples and directed witnesses not to speak about the incident.
