AT A GLANCE

An extended series of close-encounter UAP events affected the population of Colares Island in northern Brazil over several months. Objects fired concentrated beams of light at residents, causing documented physical injuries. The Brazilian Air Force conducted secret Operation Prato, deploying personnel to observe and photograph the objects. The classified report, declassified in 2004, documented hundreds of incidents and included photographs of the craft.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Beginning in October 1977, the residents of Colares Island — a small island community of approximately 2,000 people in the Marajó Bay of northern Brazil — began experiencing nightly visitations by disc-shaped and cylindrical objects that descended at low altitude and directed focused beams of light at people. The beams caused documented physical effects including circular burns, hair loss, localized anemia, and puncture-like wounds to the skin in the areas struck by the light. Some victims required hospitalization. Local doctors documented and photographed the injuries. The Brazilian Air Force deployed a team under Captain Uyrangê Hollanda in what became Operation Prato — a secret aerial and ground surveillance operation to document the phenomenon. The team photographed numerous objects and collected hundreds of witness accounts over several months. Captain Hollanda later stated in interviews before his death that the operation photographed real craft that defied conventional explanation. The Brazilian Air Force classified the Operation Prato report SECRET; portions were declassified in 2004, providing the most detailed official government documentation of extended close-encounter UAP events in the Western Hemisphere outside U.S. records.

Gulf Breeze UAP Series — FAA Radar Tracks, Multiple Witnesses

Gulf Breeze, Santa Rosa Sound, Florida, USA

Beginning in November 1987, a series of UAP incidents occurred over Gulf Breeze, Florida. Multiple photographs were taken by local contractor Ed Walters and later by ~130 other independent witnesses. FAA radar confirmed unidentified targets over the Gulf of Mexico. Military pilots reported visual contacts. MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) investigators, a medical doctor, and a USAF physician analyzed the physical effects reported by primary witness Walters.
