AT A GLANCE

RAAF Pearce radar and Perth airport simultaneously tracked a formation of objects over Western Australia. Merchant ship crews off the coast also filed reports. The RAAF's investigation produced one of Australia's most detailed classified military UAP records from the 1950s.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On July 30, 1958, RAAF Pearce air base radar and Perth Airport ATC simultaneously tracked a formation of unidentified objects performing maneuvers over Western Australia. The formation was also observed visually by RAAF Pearce personnel and by the crews of several merchant vessels in the approaches to Fremantle harbor. The formation performed coordinated maneuvers for 12 minutes before departing at high speed to the southwest over the Indian Ocean. The RAAF's investigation produced a detailed classified report that was forwarded through Australian and US Five Eyes intelligence channels. The case was cross-referenced with similar formation sightings over the Pacific during the same period. Australia's Department of Air maintained a classified UAP files program parallel to the US Blue Book, and the Perth case became one of the most significant entries in the Australian record given the simultaneous multi-sensor, multi-location confirmation.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Dual ATC and RAAF radar simultaneous tracking
  • Merchant vessel offshore confirmation
  • Australian Five Eyes channel sharing
  • Indian Ocean departure track
  • Key Australian 1950s classified record

RAAF Bass Strait Multi-Crew Encounters 1978

Bass Strait, Victoria/Tasmania border

The Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania experienced a documented wave of UAP encounters in 1978 involving multiple RAAF aircraft, civil aviation crews, and Bass Strait ferry crews. The Australian Department of Air tracked the wave and issued a classified summary. The 1978 Bass Strait wave preceded and set the context for the October 1978 Valentich disappearance, and researchers have argued the full extent of the wave made the disappearance more credible.
