AT A GLANCE

The Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania experienced a documented wave of UAP encounters in 1978 involving multiple RAAF aircraft, civil aviation crews, and Bass Strait ferry crews. The Australian Department of Air tracked the wave and issued a classified summary. The 1978 Bass Strait wave preceded and set the context for the October 1978 Valentich disappearance, and researchers have argued the full extent of the wave made the disappearance more credible.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

The September-October 1978 period in the Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania produced a concentrated series of UAP encounters across multiple observer categories. RAAF aircraft crews on training and surveillance missions reported orbs performing maneuvers. Civil aviation crews on regular Bass Strait crossings reported the same phenomenon. Bass Strait ferry crews observed the objects from the water. The Australian Department of Air tracked the wave and compiled a classified summary of the accumulated reports. The volume and consistency of the reports across such diverse observer categories — military aviation, civil aviation, and maritime — indicated a genuine and persistent phenomenon in the Bass Strait corridor. Researchers studying the October 1978 Valentich disappearance have argued that understanding the 1978 Bass Strait wave as an established context makes the disappearance less isolated and more credible as a UAP-related event. The Department of Air's classified wave summary acknowledged the encounters without explanation.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Multiple RAAF, civil aviation, and ferry crews simultaneously during same period
  • Australian Department of Air classified wave summary compiled
  • Bass Strait corridor established as most active Australian UAP geographic area
  • Directly preceded Valentich disappearance — provides contextual wave
  • Diverse observer categories: military, civil aviation, maritime
  • Researchers link wave to Valentich disappearance as continuous context
