AT A GLANCE

During Operation Ranch Hand defoliation missions over South Vietnam, USAF C-123 Provider crews observed luminous orbs pacing their formation for 35 minutes. The classified nature of the Ranch Hand operation meant the UAP reports went through special handling channels.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On February 14, 1966, USAF C-123 Provider aircraft crews conducting Operation Ranch Hand defoliation sorties over the Central Highlands of South Vietnam observed multiple luminous orbs performing sustained formation flight alongside their aircraft at 1,000–5,000 feet for approximately 35 minutes. Operation Ranch Hand — the classified program deploying Agent Orange and other herbicides over Vietnam — operated under special handling procedures, meaning the UAP reports generated by the crews were routed through classified compartment channels rather than standard JANAP-146 procedures. The orbs appeared to track individual aircraft within the formation before departing. The reports were routed to USAF Special Operations Command and classified under the Ranch Hand program compartment. The unusual chain of custody meant these reports were effectively invisible to standard UAP investigators including Project Blue Book — illustrating how the compartmentalization of classified programs could isolate UAP reports from central analysis.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Classified Ranch Hand program compartment
  • Reports isolated from Blue Book analysis
  • 35-minute sustained formation shadowing
  • Special operations chain of custody
  • Compartmentalization hides UAP from central analysis

Korean War UAP Intercepts — USAF Combat Reports

Korean Peninsula and Yellow Sea, Korea

US Air Force and Navy combat pilots filed dozens of formal UAP encounter reports during the Korean War. B-29 bomber crews and fighter pilots described glowing orbs and structured craft performing extreme maneuvers in combat airspace. USAF Far East Air Force (FEAF) officially investigated and filed reports with Project Blue Book at Wright-Patterson AFB. Several cases were classified SECRET and are now available through NARA.

Japan JSDF Radar UAP Detections — Parliamentary Disclosure

Japanese territorial airspace (multiple sectors)

In April 2023, the Japanese government disclosed to its Parliament (the Diet) that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) had recorded multiple unidentified aerial objects detected by radar that could not be identified as any known aircraft or drone. The disclosure followed a formal parliamentary inquiry. Japan's Ministry of Defense established new UAP reporting protocols in 2020 and the 2023 disclosure represented the first formal parliamentary acknowledgment of operational UAP detections.
