AT A GLANCE

South Korean and US Forces Korea radar simultaneously tracked multiple unidentified objects over sensitive military installations in Gyeonggi Province for three hours. ROK Air Force F-15Ks were scrambled but pilots reported complete radar failure on approach. USFK classified the incident under special protocols.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On April 7, 2011, South Korean Air Force and US Forces Korea (USFK) radar installations simultaneously detected multiple unidentified objects over the heavily militarized Gyeonggi Province, home to both ROK and US military facilities including Osan Air Base and Camp Humphreys. The three-hour incident involved multiple contacts performing hovering maneuvers and brief high-speed transits over the installation complex. ROK Air Force F-15K Slam Eagles were scrambled and pilots achieved visual contact — describing luminous spherical objects — but reported complete radar system failures when closing to within weapons range. The objects appeared immune to standard air defense radar lock-on. USFK classified the incident under US-Korea combined command special protocols. The Joint Intelligence Operations Center Korea prepared a classified assessment noting that no North Korean aircraft or drone could account for the performance parameters observed, and that Chinese military assets were similarly ruled out. The incident added to the broader classified picture of UAP activity in the Korean Peninsula operating environment.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • US and ROK simultaneous radar tracking
  • F-15K radar failure on approach
  • 3-hour duration over military complex
  • China and DPRK ruled out in assessment
  • USFK special protocol classification

Korean War UAP Intercepts — USAF Combat Reports

Korean Peninsula and Yellow Sea, Korea

US Air Force and Navy combat pilots filed dozens of formal UAP encounter reports during the Korean War. B-29 bomber crews and fighter pilots described glowing orbs and structured craft performing extreme maneuvers in combat airspace. USAF Far East Air Force (FEAF) officially investigated and filed reports with Project Blue Book at Wright-Patterson AFB. Several cases were classified SECRET and are now available through NARA.

Japan JSDF Radar UAP Detections — Parliamentary Disclosure

Japanese territorial airspace (multiple sectors)

In April 2023, the Japanese government disclosed to its Parliament (the Diet) that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) had recorded multiple unidentified aerial objects detected by radar that could not be identified as any known aircraft or drone. The disclosure followed a formal parliamentary inquiry. Japan's Ministry of Defense established new UAP reporting protocols in 2020 and the 2023 disclosure represented the first formal parliamentary acknowledgment of operational UAP detections.
