AT A GLANCE

Building contractor Ed Walters photographed a disc-shaped craft with a blue beam above Gulf Breeze, Florida beginning in November 1987. Over 18 months, Walters claimed 40+ separate photographs and a physical beam that paralyzed him. Dozens of other Gulf Breeze residents independently photographed similar objects over the same period. MUFON and FUFOR investigation was extensive. Walters' case became one of the most controversial in UAP history, with both significant supporting independent witnesses and later challenges to evidence integrity.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On November 11, 1987, Ed Walters, a building contractor in Gulf Breeze, Florida, reportedly observed and photographed a large disc-shaped craft hovering over the road outside his home. The photographs showed a distinctly structured craft with a blue beam extending downward. Over the next 18 months, Walters claimed approximately 40 additional encounters and photographs, some involving a blue beam that physically paralyzed him. His wife Brenda witnessed some encounters. MUFON and the Fund for UFO Research conducted extensive investigations. What made Gulf Breeze unusual and significant was that dozens of other Gulf Breeze residents independently photographed similar objects over the same extended period — many of whom had no connection to Walters. The sheer number of independent secondary witnesses and their photographs were analyzed by photographic experts. Polaroid film technical analysis found evidence consistent with genuine double-exposed images showing structured craft. The US Air Force Eglin AFB is nearby, and some investigators noted anomalous radar contacts in the area during the period. In 1990, a house previously owned by Walters was found to contain a model consistent with one of the photographed objects, which skeptics cited as evidence of hoax. Gulf Breeze remains one of the most divisive cases in UAP history, with genuine independent secondary witnesses complicating a straightforward debunking, and evidence of possible hoax complicating straightforward acceptance.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • 40+ photographs over 18 months — extensive photographic record
  • Dozens of independent Gulf Breeze residents photographed similar objects separately
  • Polaroid film analysis found technical markers consistent with genuine multiple exposures
  • Physical paralysis during encounters described — physiological effect claim
  • Model found in former residence — primary evidence challenge
  • MUFON conducted one of its most extensive field investigations on this case

Travis Walton Abduction — Arizona Forestry Crew 1975

Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona

The only alleged abduction case with multiple witnesses to the initial incident who passed polygraph examinations. Six members of a forestry crew in Arizona watched a beam of light strike crew member Travis Walton, who then disappeared for five days. When Walton reappeared, he described an experience aboard a craft with multiple humanoid beings. All six crew witnesses passed polygraph tests administered independently. The case attracted sustained scientific and law enforcement investigation.

Gimbal UAP — Rotating Object Against the Wind

U.S. East Coast (Atlantic), ~100 miles offshore

An F/A-18 Super Hornet ATFLIR pod captured a disc-shaped object visibly rotating against the direction of wind at 25,000 feet. The object moved into the prevailing wind and appeared to rotate continuously with no visible means of propulsion. DoD officially released the FLIR footage in 2020; AARO lists it as unresolved.

Coyne Army Helicopter Near-Miss Over Ohio

Mansfield, Ohio, USA

An Army Reserve UH-1 helicopter crew of four had a near-collision with a large grey metallic object over Mansfield, Ohio. The object stopped the helicopter's controlled descent and the aircraft inexplicably climbed 2,000 feet with no crew input. The incident is regarded as one of the most credible military UAP cases in the official record due to the four-person trained military crew and corroborating ground witnesses.
