AT A GLANCE

A USAF C-17 Globemaster crew on a training mission from Elmendorf reported a metallic disc that paced the C-17 before departing vertically. Elmendorf approach radar confirmed the track. The incident report was filed to Pacific Air Forces Command. As one of the first C-17 UAP encounters, it highlighted that the new generation of Air Mobility Command aircraft was encountering the same phenomena as tactical fighter crews.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On June 17, 1994, a USAF C-17A Globemaster III crew on a training mission from Elmendorf Air Force Base encountered an unidentified metallic disc-shaped craft at 35,000 feet over the Alaskan interior. The disc paced the C-17 at the same altitude and speed for approximately 7 minutes. Crew members observed the object clearly through the C-17's large cockpit windows. The disc then departed vertically at extreme speed. Elmendorf approach radar confirmed a contact in the corresponding position. The crew filed an incident report to Pacific Air Forces Command. As one of the earliest documented C-17 UAP encounters, the Elmendorf case established that Air Mobility Command large transport aircraft were encountering UAP phenomena at high altitude, not just tactical fighter aircrews. The C-17's large cockpit windows and multi-crew configuration provided multiple independent observers in the same aircraft. The encounter was handled through the standard Pacific Air Forces incident reporting chain.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • C-17 Globemaster — large multi-crew transport provides multiple independent cockpit observers

Farmington New Mexico — Fleet of 500 Discs

Farmington, New Mexico, USA

Approximately 500 Farmington, New Mexico residents simultaneously observed a massive fleet of hundreds of disc-shaped objects flying in formation overhead for 30 minutes. Three local newspaper reporters independently witnessed the event and filed reports. The objects were documented at high altitude traveling at high speed in formation, with individual objects breaking formation and rejoining. Project Blue Book declined to investigate.

Edwards AFB — Test Pilots and Tower Report Disc

Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA

Edwards AFB control tower controllers and multiple F-104 Starfighter test pilots observed a metallic disc maneuvering over the base at high altitude. The object was tracked visually by tower personnel and by pilots in flight. Project Blue Book investigated and logged the case as 'unidentified.' The encounter is notable for occurring at the USAF's primary aircraft test facility with multiple trained military aviators as witnesses.
