AT A GLANCE

Michigan State Police officers and hundreds of Michigan residents reported disc-shaped craft at low altitude over several days. Project Blue Book sent Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who suggested swamp gas as an explanation — a response so widely ridiculed that it prompted Congressional hearings. House Minority Leader Gerald Ford demanded an investigation. The swamp gas controversy directly led to the Condon Committee scientific study of UAP.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Beginning March 21, 1966, Michigan State Police officers, a farm family, University of Michigan students, and ultimately over 500 witnesses across Michigan reported disc-shaped craft at low altitude. The reports from professional police observers were particularly credible. Project Blue Book sent its scientific consultant Dr. J. Allen Hynek to investigate. Under pressure to produce a quick explanation for the wave of reports, Hynek suggested 'swamp gas' — fermented marsh gas — as a possible explanation for some cases. The public response was immediate and furious. House Minority Leader Gerald Ford demanded Congressional hearings and wrote to the Secretary of the Air Force. The political pressure generated by the swamp gas controversy directly led to Congress funding the Condon Committee — the scientific study of UFO phenomena conducted by the University of Colorado from 1966 to 1968. Hynek later publicly repudiated the swamp gas explanation and devoted the rest of his career to serious scientific study of UAP, founding the Center for UFO Studies. The Michigan 1966 wave is thus one of the most consequential in terms of its political and scientific legacy.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

  • Hynek's swamp gas explanation publicly ridiculed by Congress and press
  • Gerald Ford House Minority Leader demanded Congressional hearings
  • Directly led to Condon Committee funding — congressional political pressure
  • Most consequential UAP wave politically — changed US scientific policy

Gimbal UAP — Rotating Object Against the Wind

U.S. East Coast (Atlantic), ~100 miles offshore

An F/A-18 Super Hornet ATFLIR pod captured a disc-shaped object visibly rotating against the direction of wind at 25,000 feet. The object moved into the prevailing wind and appeared to rotate continuously with no visible means of propulsion. DoD officially released the FLIR footage in 2020; AARO lists it as unresolved.

Coyne Army Helicopter Near-Miss Over Ohio

Mansfield, Ohio, USA

An Army Reserve UH-1 helicopter crew of four had a near-collision with a large grey metallic object over Mansfield, Ohio. The object stopped the helicopter's controlled descent and the aircraft inexplicably climbed 2,000 feet with no crew input. The incident is regarded as one of the most credible military UAP cases in the official record due to the four-person trained military crew and corroborating ground witnesses.

Pinecastle Air Force Base Sighting 1952

Pinecastle Air Force Base, Florida

A USAF B-29 crew returning to Pinecastle observed a large disc that executed a series of aerobatic maneuvers before hovering stationary as the bomber passed beneath it. Tower operators confirmed the radar contact. The disc paced the B-29 for several minutes before ascending vertically at extreme speed.
