DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On September 23, 1949, a United Airlines pilot en route from San Francisco to Portland observed a formation of seven disc-shaped objects overtake his aircraft at high speed over Mendocino County. The pilot reported the objects via radio to the Civil Aeronautics Authority tower at Ukiah, where operators confirmed the objects on radar. Approximately forty ground observers in Ukiah independently reported seeing the same formation. The discs were estimated at 50–70 feet in diameter each, flying in a precise V-formation before executing a sharp banking turn and accelerating beyond visual range in seconds. The FBI's Ukiah field office dispatched agents who interviewed the pilot and multiple ground witnesses, compiling a classified report forwarded directly to Director J. Edgar Hoover under the Bureau's standing order to report all disc sightings. The FBI files, released through FOIA in the 1970s, show this as one of the most credible multi-witness aviation reports in the Bureau's early UAP record set.

Kenneth Arnold Flying Saucer Formation

Mount Rainier, Washington, USA

Private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported nine crescent-shaped objects flying in formation near Mount Rainier at an estimated 1,700 mph — far exceeding any known aircraft of the era. His account coined the term 'flying saucer' and triggered the first formal FBI and Army Air Force investigation.

Mount Rainier Formation Intercept Attempt 1950

Mount Rainier, Washington State

Three years after Kenneth Arnold's first modern sighting near the same mountain, a USAF pilot and multiple airline crews observed a nine-disc formation in the same corridor. The FBI Seattle office investigated and filed a classified duplicate of the Arnold-era reports, noting the geographic persistence of the phenomenon.
