AT A GLANCE

The same wave of triangular craft beginning in Belgium in November 1989 extended to southern England in December. Kent Police received hundreds of calls. MOD radar confirmed unusual contacts. Nick Pope later identified this as a distinct UK manifestation of the Belgian triangle phenomenon.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On December 12, 1989, as the Belgian triangle wave was in its opening phase — having begun just weeks earlier with reports from Liège — the same phenomenon appeared over East Kent in southern England. Over 1,000 civilians and multiple Kent Police officers reported large triangular craft with bright lights at each vertex moving silently at low altitude. MOD radar confirmed unusual low-altitude contacts. The UK sightings mirrored the Belgian reports in craft description, flight behavior, and witness reaction almost exactly. Nick Pope, who was at the time beginning his career at the MOD's S4(Air) UFO desk, subsequently wrote that the Kent and Belgian sightings were clearly related phenomena and that MOD's failure to coordinate analysis with Belgian Air Force was a significant intelligence gap. The December 1989 UK sightings were the beginning of a triangular craft wave that would continue in Britain through 1993, running parallel to the Belgian wave and suggesting the same phenomenon was operating across both sides of the English Channel.

Perm Russia Mass Sighting 1990

Perm Oblast, Russia

The Perm Russia event of 1990 was one of the Soviet Union's largest mass sightings, involving hundreds of witnesses and Soviet Army unit observations. The 1990 glasnost atmosphere allowed partial reporting in Soviet media. Perm ATC radar confirmed the contacts. The Soviet Academy of Sciences requested the incident files.
