AT A GLANCE

Two Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms attempted to intercept a bright diamond-shaped object over Tehran. Both aircraft experienced complete weapons systems and communications failures when attempting to engage. The object emitted smaller objects during the encounter. A Defense Intelligence Agency report called it 'an outstanding report' that 'could be of significant intelligence interest.'

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

The Tehran incident is one of the most well-documented military UAP encounters in the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency records. On September 19, 1976, Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) F-4 Phantom interceptors were scrambled twice after civilian reports of a bright light over Tehran. The first F-4 experienced total instrument and communications failure as it approached; the pilot turned away and systems restored. A second F-4, crewed by General Parviz Jafari (then a lieutenant), closed to within firing range and attempted to launch an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile. At that moment, weapons control systems failed completely. The object then separated a smaller, brighter sub-object that moved rapidly toward the F-4; the crew initiated evasive maneuvers. A second small object separated from the main body and descended toward the ground. The DIA document describing this event — declassified and available in the NARA archive — includes a handwritten comment 'an outstanding report' and rates it 'Reliability of Source: Confirmed Reliable.' The report notes the case 'could be of significant intelligence interest' due to the weapons and systems interference. General Jafari testified about this encounter at a 2007 National Press Club event. The 2026 archive release includes previously withheld NSA signals collection from the intercept period.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Both F-4 Phantoms experienced complete weapons system failure on approach
  • Communications systems failed when within engagement range
  • Object separated smaller sub-objects during encounter
  • Smaller object moved toward aircraft — crew executed evasive maneuvers
  • DIA report rated source 'Confirmed Reliable' and called it 'outstanding'
  • NSA signals collection from the period included in 2026 archive release

Tehran 1976 — Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Intercept

Tehran, Iran (airspace north of city)

Two Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom jets scrambled to intercept a bright object over Tehran. Both aircraft experienced complete weapons system and communication failures when attempting to engage. The object released a smaller object that pursued one of the F-4s. A DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) report classified the case as an 'outstanding UAP report' and it became one of the most cited US intelligence UAP documents, later released via FOIA.

Iran Shiraz Imperial Air Force Encounter 1976

Tehran Airspace, Iran

Two Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms were scrambled to intercept a luminous object over Tehran. One aircraft's weapons and communications systems failed when the crew attempted to fire. The object emitted a smaller object that descended and landed. US DIA Defense Intelligence Agency produced a formal assessment report classifying the Iranian incident as one of the most significant UAP encounters in the Middle East. The DIA report was later declassified under FOIA.

Gulf War UAP Reports — USCENTCOM Operational Records

Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia theater of operations

During Operation Desert Storm, US and Coalition combat aircrews filed multiple reports of unidentified objects in the operational theater. USCENTCOM records, partially declassified, document objects that appeared on radar but did not match the transponder signatures of any Coalition aircraft. Several fighter pilots reported intercept attempts. The objects performed maneuvers that exceeded the capabilities of any known aircraft in the theater.
