AT A GLANCE

Two Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms were scrambled to intercept a luminous object over Tehran. One aircraft's weapons and communications systems failed when the crew attempted to fire. The object emitted a smaller object that descended and landed. US DIA Defense Intelligence Agency produced a formal assessment report classifying the Iranian incident as one of the most significant UAP encounters in the Middle East. The DIA report was later declassified under FOIA.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On September 18, 1976, the Imperial Iranian Air Force scrambled two F-4 Phantom II fighters from Shahrokhi Air Base after multiple civilian and military witnesses reported a brilliant object over Tehran. General Yousefi personally observed the object before ordering the scramble. The first F-4 approached to within 25 miles and experienced instrument failure, forcing return to base. A second F-4 with crew of General Parviz Jafari achieved close approach and the crew observed the object performing maneuvers at extreme speed. When Jafari prepared to fire an AIM-9 Sidewinder, his weapons control panel went completely dark and communications failed. The object emitted a smaller cylindrical object that descended and appeared to land southeast of Tehran. A US Defense Intelligence Agency officer at the Tehran DIA office compiled a formal assessment report that was circulated to the NSA, CIA, White House, and Joint Chiefs of Staff. The DIA report was subsequently declassified and published via FOIA — it remains one of the most detailed official military UAP assessments in the public record.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Weapons panel went dark when pilot attempted to fire
  • Communications failure on weapons attempt only
  • Emitted secondary object that landed southeast of Tehran
  • DIA circulated report to NSA, CIA, White House, and JCS
  • DIA assessment FOIA-declassified — in public record
  • Most significant officially-assessed Middle East UAP encounter

Gulf War UAP Reports — USCENTCOM Operational Records

Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia theater of operations

During Operation Desert Storm, US and Coalition combat aircrews filed multiple reports of unidentified objects in the operational theater. USCENTCOM records, partially declassified, document objects that appeared on radar but did not match the transponder signatures of any Coalition aircraft. Several fighter pilots reported intercept attempts. The objects performed maneuvers that exceeded the capabilities of any known aircraft in the theater.

MQ-9 Reaper Donut-Shaped UAP — Middle East 2023

Middle East — USAF MQ-9 operational area

A USAF MQ-9 Reaper drone operating in the Middle East captured FLIR footage of a donut or torus-shaped metallic object hovering at altitude in 2023. The footage was included in AARO briefing materials and was among the cases presented to congressional oversight staff. The object appeared to have a hole through its center and metallic surface properties visible on infrared imaging.
