AT A GLANCE

Indian Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) troops stationed in the Ladakh region near the China–India Line of Actual Control reported over 100 sightings of bright orb-like objects over a 3-month period. The Indian Army deployed a technical team and an imaging specialist. The objects could not be identified as Chinese drones or aircraft. A formal Indian Army technical report was filed. The incidents were referred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Between August and October 2012, Indian Army units and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel stationed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh — the disputed India-China border zone — logged over 100 sightings of yellowish orbs that appeared to rise from the Chinese side of the border, hover for extended periods at extreme altitude, and then depart. The objects were consistently bright, estimated at extreme altitude (beyond drone operational ceilings), and in some cases appeared in small formations. Indian Army technical teams deployed to the area; an Indian Army specialist with observation equipment was stationed at Thakung near the Pangong Lake. The Indian Air Force was consulted; IAF radar in the region was unable to track the objects, and they were confirmed as not emitting transponder signals. The Indian Army filed a formal technical report acknowledging 329 incidents between August 2012 and February 2013. The matter was referred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for analysis. ISRO's assessment was that the objects did not appear to be satellites or space objects. DRDO could not identify them as Chinese drones. The Indian Ministry of Defence acknowledged the technical investigation in parliamentary questions.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • 329 formally logged Indian Army incidents — Ladakh LAC zone, August 2012 to February 2013
  • Indian Army technical team deployed; objects tracked with imaging equipment by dedicated specialist
  • IAF radar unable to track objects — no transponder signal detected
  • Referred to ISRO and DRDO: ISRO ruled out satellites; DRDO ruled out Chinese drones
  • Indian Ministry of Defence acknowledged technical investigation in formal parliamentary response
  • Objects appeared to rise from Chinese side of LAC — extreme altitude beyond known drone ceilings
