AT A GLANCE

The Calvine photographs — six color images of a massive diamond-shaped craft over the Scottish Highlands — were given to the Daily Record but confiscated by the MOD. The photos stayed classified for 32 years. The MOD's own staff described them as the best quality UAP photographs ever received by the Ministry.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On August 4, 1990, two civilian walkers near Calvine in Perthshire photographed a large diamond-shaped craft hovering in the Scottish Highland sky for approximately 10 minutes. Six color photographs were taken before the object accelerated vertically at extreme speed, leaving an RAF aircraft visible in one frame for scale. The photographers gave the images to the Daily Record newspaper which contacted the MOD. The MOD confiscated all copies of the photographs and classified them for 32 years under national security provisions. During his tenure as MOD UFO desk officer, Nick Pope saw the photographs and described the object as a 'truly massive' diamond-shaped structured craft with no visible means of propulsion, stating they were the best quality UAP photographs ever received by the Ministry. The photographs were finally released in 2022 after a 32-year classification period — though the released versions were lower resolution than the originals. The RAF aircraft visible in one frame allowed photo analysts to estimate the craft's size at approximately 100 feet. The MOD's 32-year suppression of the images is one of the most extensively documented cases of official UAP photograph suppression.
