AT A GLANCE

Portuguese Navy frigate Almirante Gago Coutinho tracked a metallic disc on radar and visually for 28 minutes in the North Atlantic. The disc caused the frigate's navigation radar to show anomalous returns. NATO SACLANT maritime command was notified. The Portuguese Navy filed a confidential report that was later included in Portugal's official UAP file collection alongside the 1977 Faro Air Force incident.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On July 22, 1982, the Portuguese Navy frigate Almirante Gago Coutinho (F-471) operating approximately 200 miles west of mainland Portugal in the North Atlantic tracked an unidentified contact on its navigation radar that subsequently manifested as a visually observable metallic disc at 200 feet altitude. The disc remained near the frigate for 28 minutes, performing slow circuits before making a rapid departure. The frigate's navigation radar showed anomalous ghost returns when the disc was in proximity — a behavior consistent with active electronic countermeasures or electromagnetic interference. NATO SACLANT (Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic) maritime surveillance command was notified of the contact. The Portuguese Navy filed a confidential report that became part of the official Portuguese military UAP documentation. The 1982 naval encounter, combined with the 1977 Air Force Faro incident, gives Portugal one of the more complete official dual-service UAP file collections among NATO nations.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Navigation radar anomalous ghost returns — electronic interference
  • NATO SACLANT maritime command notified
  • 28-minute visual and radar track by naval crew
  • Portuguese Navy official report — part of national UAP file
  • Dual-service UAP record: Navy + Air Force (with 1977 Faro)
  • One of most complete NATO nation dual-service UAP file sets

Keflavik NATO Base Encounter 1979

Keflavik, Iceland — NATO Air Base

A disc-shaped craft performed extended maneuvers over NATO's Keflavik Air Base — the strategic North Atlantic gateway — for 40 minutes. USAF and IDF personnel confirmed the contact. NATO radar tracked the object. The encounter was classified at the NATO SECRET level and shared through alliance channels.

Portuguese Air Force Faro Intercept 1977

Faro, Algarve, Portugal

Portuguese Air Force F-86 Sabres scrambled from Monte Real Air Base tracked and attempted to intercept a metallic disc for 40 minutes over the Algarve coast. Multiple radar platforms confirmed the contact. The pursuit radar on the F-86s showed interference only when pointed directly at the object. Portuguese Air Ministry declassified the encounter in 1977 — unusually rapid official release.

Soviet Army Kapustin Yar Cosmodrome UAP 1989

Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan Oblast, Soviet Union

A metallic disc observed over the Soviet Union's Kapustin Yar missile test range for two hours. Soviet Army forces shone searchlights on the object; it responded by directing a beam at the searchlight position. 8th Air Defence Division scrambled interceptors that could not achieve weapons lock. KGB filed a classified report. One of the most sensitive Soviet military UAP encounters — over a strategic missile facility.
