Portuguese Air Force Faro Intercept 1977

On September 4, 1977, Monte Real Air Base radar detected an unidentified contact over the Algarve coast at 15,000 feet. Portuguese Air Force F-86 Sabre fighters were scrambled for intercept. The crews visually acquired a metallic disc-shaped craft that maintained distance ahead of the interceptors while demonstrating ability to observe the F-86s' approach vectors. The pursuit radar on the aircraft showed degraded or absent returns when pointed directly at the craft — consistent with active radar jamming or radar-absorbent material. The encounter lasted 40 minutes and was tracked by Monte Real ground radar and independently confirmed by commercial aircraft transiting the area on IFR flight plans. The Portuguese Air Ministry processed the encounter through official channels and unusually released an official summary within the same year — one of the faster official military acknowledgments on record. Portuguese declassification included radar plots.
