DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On November 17, 1986, JAL Flight 1628, a Boeing 747 freighter en route from Paris to Tokyo via Anchorage, encountered unidentified objects over Alaska for approximately 50 minutes. Captain Kenjyu Terauchi reported two smaller craft with pulsating arrays of lights flying in formation ahead of the aircraft, followed by an enormous walnut-shaped craft that he described as the size of an aircraft carrier. Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center confirmed radar contacts. USAF Elmendorf Regional Operational Control Center also tracked the objects. The FAA conducted an official investigation, and FAA Administrator Donald Engen personally held a press conference acknowledging the incident and the radar confirmation. The FAA investigation documents were later obtained under FOIA and showed the agency took the case seriously at the highest levels. Captain Terauchi's credibility was never disputed.
