AT A GLANCE

Photojournalist Ed Keffel of Brazil's largest news magazine O Cruzeiro captured five sequential photographs of a disc-shaped craft over the beachside suburb of Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. The photographs were analyzed by the Brazilian Air Force, the Brazilian Navy, and the US Air Force. All three concluded the photographs were genuine and not composites. One of the first military-analyzed authentic UAP photograph sets in South American history.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On May 7, 1952, journalists Joao Martins and photographer Ed Keffel of O Cruzeiro — Brazil's largest circulation news magazine — were near the Barra da Tijuca coastline when they spotted a disc-shaped craft moving at low altitude. Keffel captured five sequential photographs in approximately 60 seconds showing the craft in different positions and angles. The photographs were submitted to official analysis by the Brazilian Air Force technical division, the Brazilian Navy, and the US Air Force attaché in Rio de Janeiro. All three independent analyses concluded the photographs were genuine and showed an actual object rather than a model or composite. The US Air Force analysis was forwarded to Project Blue Book. O Cruzeiro published the photographs as an exclusive, making them some of the most widely-distributed authentic UAP photographs of the early 1950s. The triple military authentication from two countries on five sequential images remains significant.
