AT A GLANCE

A USAF C-124 Globemaster crew en route to Japan observed a large formation of discs overtake their aircraft at high speed over Alaska. Elmendorf AFB radar tracked the formation. The incident was documented in the Blue Book files and contributed to concerns about Soviet activity in Alaskan airspace.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On June 18, 1952, a USAF C-124 Globemaster transport aircraft en route from Anchorage to Japan observed a large formation of disc-shaped objects overtake the aircraft at extreme speed over Alaskan airspace. The aircraft commander and all crew members observed the objects, which were estimated at 50–80 feet in diameter each and flying in a precise V-formation. Elmendorf AFB radar tracked the formation for approximately five minutes before it departed the coverage area to the northwest toward Siberia. The incident was particularly sensitive given its occurrence in Alaskan airspace adjacent to Soviet territory, as intelligence analysts initially considered whether the discs could be advanced Soviet experimental aircraft. The Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson analyzed the case and concluded the performance characteristics were beyond any known Soviet or American aircraft. The case was classified at a higher level than most Blue Book files and forwarded to CIA analysts who were studying Soviet aerospace developments. The Alaskan departure heading — toward Siberia — was noted as a potentially significant navigational data point.

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.

Farmington New Mexico — Fleet of 500 Discs

Farmington, New Mexico, USA

Approximately 500 Farmington, New Mexico residents simultaneously observed a massive fleet of hundreds of disc-shaped objects flying in formation overhead for 30 minutes. Three local newspaper reporters independently witnessed the event and filed reports. The objects were documented at high altitude traveling at high speed in formation, with individual objects breaking formation and rejoining. Project Blue Book declined to investigate.

White Sands Missile Range UAP Observations — Clyde Tombaugh

White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA

Dr. Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the dwarf planet Pluto and a leading observational astronomer working at White Sands Missile Range, formally reported observing a fast-moving rectangular formation of lights on August 20, 1949. Tombaugh also made additional observations from his home in Las Cruces. His formal reports to the USAF and to Project Blue Book are preserved in government archives. Tombaugh stated the objects moved with 'precision control.'
