AT A GLANCE

An Air Zimbabwe Boeing 707 crew reported a formation of lights near Harare. Zimbabwe Air Force Hawk jets were scrambled and the pilots confirmed the contacts, but their radar systems failed. Zimbabwe's Air Commodore David Thorne publicly confirmed the encounter, making it one of Africa's best-documented official cases.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On July 22, 1985, an Air Zimbabwe Boeing 707 crew inbound to Harare International Airport reported multiple unidentified lights performing maneuvers near the aircraft. Zimbabwe Air Force Hawker Siddeley Hawk jets were scrambled from New Sarum Air Base. Both Hawk pilots confirmed visual contact with the objects. Critically, both pilots reported their radar systems failing when approaching the objects — a pattern consistent with documented ECM interference in multiple other intercept cases globally. Air Commodore David Thorne of the Zimbabwe Air Force subsequently made public statements confirming the encounter and affirming that his pilots had seen something genuinely unidentified. Zimbabwe's public official confirmation — from a serving Air Force general — was one of the clearest African continent official acknowledgments of a UAP encounter and was cited in multiple research publications as an example of African nation transparency on the subject.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Air Force general public confirmation
  • Hawk pilot radar system failures
  • Rare African continent official case
  • Air Zimbabwe civilian crew also observed
  • ECM failure pattern consistency

Gulf War UAP Reports — USCENTCOM Operational Records

Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia theater of operations

During Operation Desert Storm, US and Coalition combat aircrews filed multiple reports of unidentified objects in the operational theater. USCENTCOM records, partially declassified, document objects that appeared on radar but did not match the transponder signatures of any Coalition aircraft. Several fighter pilots reported intercept attempts. The objects performed maneuvers that exceeded the capabilities of any known aircraft in the theater.

MQ-9 Reaper Donut-Shaped UAP — Middle East 2023

Middle East — USAF MQ-9 operational area

A USAF MQ-9 Reaper drone operating in the Middle East captured FLIR footage of a donut or torus-shaped metallic object hovering at altitude in 2023. The footage was included in AARO briefing materials and was among the cases presented to congressional oversight staff. The object appeared to have a hole through its center and metallic surface properties visible on infrared imaging.
