AT A GLANCE

The June 24, 1947 sighting by private pilot Kenneth Arnold of nine crescent-shaped objects near Mount Rainier, Washington, is considered the origin point of the modern UFO era. Arnold's description — objects moving 'like a saucer skipped across water' — gave rise to the term 'flying saucer.' Arnold was a highly experienced pilot with excellent aviation credentials. His report triggered thousands of similar sightings worldwide and led directly to the US Army Air Force's Project Sign, the first government UAP investigation.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On June 24, 1947, experienced private pilot and businessman Kenneth Arnold was flying his single-engine CallAir A-2 on a search mission near Mount Rainier, Washington, when he observed nine bright, crescent-shaped objects flying in a chain formation at high speed between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. Arnold timed the objects between two peaks and calculated their speed at approximately 1700 mph — nearly three times the maximum speed of any known aircraft of the era. He described the objects as flying in a weaving motion, 'like the tail of a kite' or 'like a saucer skipped across water.' He estimated them to be about 45 to 50 feet long. Arnold landed at Yakima and reported the sighting to the airport authority, then filed a full report with the FBI and Army Air Force. A wire service reporter's paraphrase of Arnold's description — 'flying saucers' — entered the global lexicon immediately. Within weeks, thousands of similar sightings were reported worldwide. The USAAF took the Arnold report seriously enough to initiate Project Sign, the first official US UAP investigation program. Arnold's aeronautical credentials, his timing methodology, and his willingness to go on record made his report the anchor event of modern UFO history. He was never shaken from his account and maintained consistency throughout his life.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Origin point of the modern UFO era — coined 'flying saucer' terminology
  • Arnold was experienced licensed pilot — made precision speed calculation at 1700 mph
  • Nine objects in chain formation observed for 3.5 minutes in clear mountain daylight
  • Filed formal reports with FBI and US Army Air Force immediately after landing
  • Arnold sighting directly triggered Project Sign — first US government UAP investigation
  • Triggered worldwide wave of similar sightings — modern UAP era begins June 24 1947

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.

Farmington New Mexico — Fleet of 500 Discs

Farmington, New Mexico, USA

Approximately 500 Farmington, New Mexico residents simultaneously observed a massive fleet of hundreds of disc-shaped objects flying in formation overhead for 30 minutes. Three local newspaper reporters independently witnessed the event and filed reports. The objects were documented at high altitude traveling at high speed in formation, with individual objects breaking formation and rejoining. Project Blue Book declined to investigate.

White Sands Missile Range UAP Observations — Clyde Tombaugh

White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA

Dr. Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the dwarf planet Pluto and a leading observational astronomer working at White Sands Missile Range, formally reported observing a fast-moving rectangular formation of lights on August 20, 1949. Tombaugh also made additional observations from his home in Las Cruces. His formal reports to the USAF and to Project Blue Book are preserved in government archives. Tombaugh stated the objects moved with 'precision control.'
