AT A GLANCE

One of the largest mass UAP observations in US history, with over 500 residents of Farmington, New Mexico observing a massive formation of disc-shaped objects on three consecutive days in March 1950. The objects were described as moving at extreme speed, sometimes in formation and sometimes individually. The Farmington Daily Times ran a front-page headline. The proximity to the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the four corners nuclear testing area attracted significant investigative interest.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On March 17, 1950, and for two additional consecutive days, the residents of Farmington, New Mexico experienced one of the most remarkable mass UAP observation events in United States history. More than 500 citizens observed a formation, or successive formations, of disc-shaped objects flying over the town at high altitude and extreme speed. On the first and most dramatic day, witnesses reported objects numbering anywhere from a few dozen to several hundred — moving in formation, performing individual maneuvers, and demonstrating speed far exceeding any known aircraft. The Farmington Daily Times published the story on its front page with the headline 'Huge Disc or Saucers Reported Over Farmington' alongside witness accounts. The event continued for three days with further observations. Investigators noted the proximity of Farmington to the Los Alamos National Laboratory — approximately 100 miles south — and to the Sandia National Laboratories, the Kirtland Air Force Base nuclear testing area, and to the White Sands Missile Range. The concentration of UAP activity over the New Mexico–Colorado four corners area in this period, which also included the Roswell crash three years earlier, has led researchers to posit a connection between UAP activity and US nuclear weapons research and development sites. The Farmington event remains the largest documented single-location mass UAP observation in the southwestern United States.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • 500+ eyewitnesses over 3 consecutive days — one of largest US mass sightings
  • Farmington Daily Times front-page coverage same day

  • Proximity to Los Alamos, Sandia, Kirtland, White Sands — nuclear nexus area
  • Part of concentrated 1947–1952 New Mexico UAP activity cluster near nuclear sites
  • Objects observed by experienced military and civilian aviation community in area

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.

Farmington New Mexico — Fleet of 500 Discs

Farmington, New Mexico, USA

Approximately 500 Farmington, New Mexico residents simultaneously observed a massive fleet of hundreds of disc-shaped objects flying in formation overhead for 30 minutes. Three local newspaper reporters independently witnessed the event and filed reports. The objects were documented at high altitude traveling at high speed in formation, with individual objects breaking formation and rejoining. Project Blue Book declined to investigate.

White Sands Missile Range UAP Observations — Clyde Tombaugh

White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA

Dr. Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the dwarf planet Pluto and a leading observational astronomer working at White Sands Missile Range, formally reported observing a fast-moving rectangular formation of lights on August 20, 1949. Tombaugh also made additional observations from his home in Las Cruces. His formal reports to the USAF and to Project Blue Book are preserved in government archives. Tombaugh stated the objects moved with 'precision control.'
