AT A GLANCE

The earliest known gun-camera-quality motion picture of UAP, filmed by Great Falls baseball team manager Nicholas Mariana. The 16mm color Kodachrome footage shows two bright objects performing a slow sweep across the Montana sky. The US Air Force analyzed the film twice — the second analysis noted that 35 frames showing the objects most clearly had been removed from the returned film. The Air Force classified the remaining footage as 'jets with sun glint' — a conclusion later contradicted by trajectory analysis.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On August 15, 1950, Great Falls Electrics baseball club manager Nicholas Mariana was inspecting Electric Park stadium with his secretary Virginia Raunig when both noticed two bright silvery objects moving across the sky. Mariana retrieved his 16mm Kodachrome movie camera from his car and filmed the objects for approximately 3 minutes before they moved out of range. The footage, when analyzed, showed two bright disc-shaped objects in a banking formation, moving in a manner inconsistent with any aircraft Mariana recognized. Mariana submitted the film to the US Air Force for analysis. When the Air Force returned the film, 35 frames showing the objects at their closest and most distinct were missing. The Air Force denied removing any frames. The remaining footage was analyzed twice by the Air Force — under Project Grudge and later in the Condon Report study — and officially attributed to two F-94 jet aircraft reflecting sunlight. Subsequent independent analysis by Robert Baker at Douglas Aircraft concluded the objects' trajectory was inconsistent with the flight path of the F-94s that had been in the vicinity. The Great Falls film remains one of the most significant early pieces of motion picture evidence and is notable for the documented removal of key frames from the original government copy.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Earliest high-quality 16mm color motion picture of UAP — August 1950
  • 35 frames confirmed missing from returned USAF copy — documented evidence removal
  • USAF trajectory analysis contradicted by independent Douglas Aircraft review
  • Two independent witnesses observed objects before filming began
  • Analyzed under both Project Grudge and Condon Report — both classified 'inconclusive'
  • Frame removal controversy made this a landmark evidence-handling case

Washington D.C. UFO Flap — Capitol Airspace

Washington D.C. / Capitol Airspace, USA

Multiple unidentified objects were tracked on radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews AFB on two separate weekends in July 1952. USAF interceptors were scrambled twice; objects vanished when jets arrived and returned when jets departed. This prompted the largest Air Force press conference since World War II and remains one of the best-documented mass radar UAP events in U.S. history.

Farmington New Mexico — Fleet of 500 Discs

Farmington, New Mexico, USA

Approximately 500 Farmington, New Mexico residents simultaneously observed a massive fleet of hundreds of disc-shaped objects flying in formation overhead for 30 minutes. Three local newspaper reporters independently witnessed the event and filed reports. The objects were documented at high altitude traveling at high speed in formation, with individual objects breaking formation and rejoining. Project Blue Book declined to investigate.

White Sands Missile Range UAP Observations — Clyde Tombaugh

White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, USA

Dr. Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the dwarf planet Pluto and a leading observational astronomer working at White Sands Missile Range, formally reported observing a fast-moving rectangular formation of lights on August 20, 1949. Tombaugh also made additional observations from his home in Las Cruces. His formal reports to the USAF and to Project Blue Book are preserved in government archives. Tombaugh stated the objects moved with 'precision control.'
