Portuguese Air Force Tomar Encounter 1977

On September 4, 1977, Portuguese Air Force Fiat G.91 pilots scrambled from Tancos Air Base in central Portugal encountered a disc-shaped object over the Tomar area of the Ribatejo. Ground radar at Tancos confirmed the contact. The G.91 crews tracked the object at 5,000 feet for 18 minutes as it performed maneuvers that exceeded the aircraft's capability to follow. The craft departed at high speed when a second scramble was initiated. Portuguese Air Force intelligence officers prepared a classified incident report. Under NATO information-sharing protocols, the Portuguese report was forwarded to NATO's classified air defense intelligence system and contributed to a growing NATO database of member-nation UAP encounters that had been assembled since the late 1950s. The Portuguese case was notable as a rare Southern European NATO member incident in the overall record dominated by Northern European and North American encounters. Portugal's 1977 cases were later referenced in declassified documents as contributing to NATO's internal awareness that UAP were a multinational phenomenon requiring alliance-level consideration.
