AT A GLANCE

A disc performed a 12-minute overflight of Wright-Patterson AFB — the home of Project Sign and the Air Technical Intelligence Center. Project Sign personnel were among the witnesses. The irony of an unexplained disc overflying the very facility responsible for studying unexplained discs was noted in classified internal communications.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On April 24, 1949, a disc-shaped object performed a 12-minute overflight of Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio — the home of Project Sign, the Air Technical Intelligence Center, and the USAAF's most sensitive foreign technology analysis capability. Project Sign personnel were among the witnesses, creating the remarkable situation in which the investigators of the UAP phenomenon were themselves witnessing it. The base commander filed a classified report. Project Sign investigators who had been studying reports from civilians and military aviators now had a direct personal observation to add to their case files. The classified internal communications from Project Sign following the April 1949 WPAFB overflight show investigators acknowledging the irony and significance of a disc-type object appearing over their own facility. The incident strengthened the position of Project Sign's 'Estimate of the Situation' advocates — the group within Sign that had been building toward an official conclusion that the phenomenon was of extraterrestrial origin.

Edwards AFB — Test Pilots and Tower Report Disc

Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA

Edwards AFB control tower controllers and multiple F-104 Starfighter test pilots observed a metallic disc maneuvering over the base at high altitude. The object was tracked visually by tower personnel and by pilots in flight. Project Blue Book investigated and logged the case as 'unidentified.' The encounter is notable for occurring at the USAF's primary aircraft test facility with multiple trained military aviators as witnesses.
