AT A GLANCE

A large acorn-shaped metallic object with a raised band of unknown symbols around its base crashed into woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. The Army cordoned off the area within hours and reportedly recovered a large object on a flatbed truck. NASA reopened the case in 2003 following a lawsuit and could not produce the original investigation file.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the evening of December 9, 1965, a fireball trailing blue smoke was observed across six U.S. states and Ontario, Canada. Ground witnesses near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, reported a large object falling into the woods and observed a bronze/gold-colored acorn-shaped object approximately the size of a Volkswagen Beetle resting in the woods, with a raised band of writing around its base described as resembling Egyptian hieroglyphics. The U.S. Army arrived within hours, cordoned off the area, and witnesses reported a large object being loaded onto a flatbed truck under military escort. The official response was that a meteorite had been investigated and nothing found. In 2003, NASA historian Leslie Kean filed a Freedom of Information lawsuit seeking the original investigation files. NASA was unable to produce the files and stated the original records had been lost. NASA subsequently re-examined the case using recovered documentation and concluded the object was most likely a Soviet Kosmos 96 space probe, but orbital mechanics experts disputed that the probe's trajectory was consistent with the observed fireball path.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS

Chiles-Whitted Eastern Airlines Rocket Object

Montgomery, Alabama, USA

Two experienced Eastern Airlines captains reported a cigar-shaped, double-decked object with a blazing exhaust that passed within 700 feet of their DC-3 at 700 mph over Montgomery, Alabama. Project Sign analysts concluded it was the 'most credible' UAP report of 1948 and drafted a classified estimate attributing it to extraterrestrial origin.

Gimbal UAP — Rotating Object Against the Wind

U.S. East Coast (Atlantic), ~100 miles offshore

An F/A-18 Super Hornet ATFLIR pod captured a disc-shaped object visibly rotating against the direction of wind at 25,000 feet. The object moved into the prevailing wind and appeared to rotate continuously with no visible means of propulsion. DoD officially released the FLIR footage in 2020; AARO lists it as unresolved.
