AT A GLANCE

During combat operations over Iraq and Syria, F/A-18 Super Hornet pilots from USS Theodore Roosevelt began encountering small spherical objects in their operating airspace over the Persian Gulf. These encounters preceded the better-known 2015 Atlantic incidents and were the beginning of a two-year pattern.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Beginning in early 2014, F/A-18 Super Hornet pilots assigned to Carrier Air Wing One aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), operating in the Persian Gulf during Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS, began reporting encounters with small spherical objects in their combat operating airspace. The encounters were initially dismissed as potential adversary drones given the active combat environment. However, as encounters multiplied and the objects demonstrated performance characteristics — hovering at 25,000 feet, making instantaneous accelerations, and withstanding attempted radar lock — that exceeded any known drone capability, the encounters were escalated up the chain of command. The Roosevelt's CIC and the Strike Force operations teams began documenting the contacts systematically. These Gulf encounters would continue and intensify as the Roosevelt transitioned to Atlantic operations in late 2014–2015, where the encounters became more frequent and dramatic — ultimately producing the Gimbal, Gofast, and other classified encounters that Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich and Commander David Fravor would eventually describe publicly.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Combat zone encounters during ISIS operations
  • Precursor to 2015 Atlantic incidents
  • Escalation chain documented
  • Small sphere pattern noted

Gulf War UAP Reports — USCENTCOM Operational Records

Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia theater of operations

During Operation Desert Storm, US and Coalition combat aircrews filed multiple reports of unidentified objects in the operational theater. USCENTCOM records, partially declassified, document objects that appeared on radar but did not match the transponder signatures of any Coalition aircraft. Several fighter pilots reported intercept attempts. The objects performed maneuvers that exceeded the capabilities of any known aircraft in the theater.

MQ-9 Reaper Donut-Shaped UAP — Middle East 2023

Middle East — USAF MQ-9 operational area

A USAF MQ-9 Reaper drone operating in the Middle East captured FLIR footage of a donut or torus-shaped metallic object hovering at altitude in 2023. The footage was included in AARO briefing materials and was among the cases presented to congressional oversight staff. The object appeared to have a hole through its center and metallic surface properties visible on infrared imaging.
