AT A GLANCE

German Bundeswehr pilots and NATO radar personnel documented multiple unidentified aerial encounters over German training airspace in the 1990s. The German Ministry of Defence maintained classified files on the incidents. A parliamentary inquiry prompted by the Greens party in 1999 resulted in the German government acknowledging the existence of UAP investigation records, though most files remained classified under national security exemptions.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Throughout the 1990s, German Bundeswehr (Federal Defence Force) pilots and radar operators reported multiple encounters with unidentified aerial objects in German and NATO training airspace. The incidents occurred particularly over Bavarian military training areas and over the North Sea. NATO radar stations in Germany — part of the NADGE (NATO Air Defence Ground Environment) system — also tracked anomalous returns. The German Ministry of Defence maintained classified investigation files. In 1999, following a parliamentary inquiry by the Green party (Grünen), the German government formally acknowledged in a parliamentary response that the Bundeswehr maintained records of UAP incidents. The government response confirmed the existence of classified files but cited national security exemptions preventing release. The response acknowledged that some Bundeswehr pilots had formally reported encounters and that radar data had been preserved. German aviation regulatory body Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) also received reports from civil aviation. Germany's UAP files remained largely classified, but the 1999 parliamentary acknowledgment established the formal existence of the German military UAP record — making Germany one of the few NATO members to acknowledge via parliamentary procedure that such records exist.

Spain IIEE Official Investigations — National UAP Documentation

Spain (national archive, multiple locations)

Spain's Ministry of Defence conducted one of Europe's most systematic military UAP investigations, maintaining classified files from the 1960s through the 1990s. Beginning in 1992, Spain became the first NATO member to voluntarily declassify and release its military UAP files. The declassified files include Spanish Air Force pilot reports, radar data, and physical evidence cases. The releases covered approximately 80 cases from 1962–1993.

Moscow UAP Events — Soviet KGB Files Partial Release

Moscow and surrounding region, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union

Following the dissolution of the USSR, limited KGB and Soviet military files on UAP investigations were disclosed. Soviet Air Defense Forces radar logs from multiple years document anomalous contacts that could not be attributed to US or NATO aircraft. Soviet military investigations were conducted under the cover designation 'MO RF Study of Anomalous Phenomena.' The partial disclosures were documented by Russian researchers and referenced in diplomatic reporting.
