AT A GLANCE

On August 13, 1956, RAF Bentwaters Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) radar and RAF Lakenheath radar both tracked unidentified objects performing extreme maneuvers over Suffolk, England. USAF F-86D Sabre jets were scrambled. One pilot achieved radar lock but the object reversed and got on his tail. The object was tracked at speeds approaching 4,000 mph. The Condon Committee called this case 'the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual UFO file.'

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

On the night of August 13–14, 1956, RAF Bentwaters Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) radar operators tracked multiple unidentified objects at speeds they estimated at 2,000–4,000 mph — far beyond any known aircraft of the era. RAF Lakenheath GCA radar independently tracked the same or similar objects. USAF 512th Fighter Interceptor Squadron F-86D Sabre jet interceptors were scrambled from RAF Bentwaters. One pilot acquired radar lock on a stationary hovering target. As the pilot closed, the object moved directly toward him at high speed and then appeared on the pilot's tail — reversing position entirely. A second F-86D was scrambled; it also reported radar contact and the object performing evasive maneuvers before disappearing. Ground radar tracked the events throughout, providing real-time corroboration of the airborne engagements. The encounter lasted approximately 5 hours. The Condon Committee (1969) analyzed the case extensively and concluded it was 'the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual UFO file' with 'complete corroboration' between ground radar and airborne pilot reports. The Condon report acknowledged it remained unexplained. The full classified case file was later released through FOIA and is available in the US National Archives.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • Three independent radar systems: RAF Bentwaters GCA, RAF Lakenheath GCA, and F-86D airborne radar
  • Objects tracked at estimated 2,000–4,000 mph — far beyond any 1956 aircraft capability
  • Object reversed from interceptor's front to its tail during pursuit — maneuver physically impossible for known craft
  • Condon Committee: 'the most puzzling and unusual case in the radar-visual UFO file — complete corroboration'
  • 5-hour event — sustained multi-platform tracking across two RAF stations and airborne interceptors
  • Full classified case file available at US National Archives via FOIA release

RAF Lakenheath — Radar-Visual Chase, UK

RAF Lakenheath / RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, UK

Radar operators at RAF Bentwaters and Lakenheath tracked multiple unknown objects over East Anglia for several hours. A USAF Venom jet interceptor was guided by radar toward one object; the pilot briefly achieved visual contact, then the object moved behind the aircraft and mirrored its every turn — effectively pursuing the interceptor. The pilot could not shake the object through multiple violent maneuvers. The Scientific Advisory Panel (Robertson Panel) evaluated this case in 2026 archive release notes as 'unexplained.'
