ROCAF Mirage 2000-5 interceptors from Hualien Air Base encountered a metallic disc that demonstrated electronic countermeasures against the Mirage's Thomson-CSF RDY radar. A major multi-hour UAP event over Beijing in June 1999 was tracked by People's Liberation Army Air Force radar stations and observed by multiple airline crews and thousands of residents. PLAAF scrambled fighter interceptors. The event contributed to the Chinese government's establishment of a UAP investigative program at Beijing Normal University. The incident was reported in Chinese state media and became the most publicly acknowledged UAP event in modern Chinese history.
