AT A GLANCE

Over 2,000 reports of rocket-like objects appeared across Sweden and Scandinavia in 1946, pre-dating Kenneth Arnold. Swedish, American, and British militaries investigated. The objects showed non-ballistic trajectories and could change course. Neither Soviet rockets nor any other conventional explanation was found.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

Beginning in February 1946 and peaking in July–August 1946, over 2,000 reports of unidentified rocket-like objects were received by Swedish authorities — representing one of the largest pre-Arnold UAP waves ever documented. The objects were initially attributed to Soviet rocket tests, but investigation revealed the objects exhibited non-ballistic trajectories, could change course in flight, and in some cases appeared to hover. Swedish military radar tracked objects performing course changes impossible for conventional rockets. US Army Air Forces observers were dispatched to Sweden and a joint US-UK-Swedish investigation concluded that while Soviet activity could not be ruled out, the observed flight characteristics were inconsistent with any known rocket technology — Soviet or otherwise. General Jimmy Doolittle visited Sweden as President Truman's personal envoy to investigate. The Swedish Defense Staff concluded the phenomenon was genuine and unexplained. The 1946 ghost rocket wave preceded Kenneth Arnold's 1947 sighting by a year and represented the modern era's first major official multi-nation UAP investigation.

WWII Foo Fighters — Allied Pilot Reports

Rhine Valley, Germany / Western Europe

Allied aircrews flying combat missions over Europe beginning in late 1944 reported glowing orange and white orbs that paced their aircraft, performed rapid maneuvers, and resisted interception. Declassified USAAF and RAF intelligence files confirm systematic reporting across multiple squadrons. OSS and USAAF intelligence ultimately ruled out German or Japanese origin.
