AT A GLANCE

A close encounter in the French Pyrenees mountains observed by multiple witnesses and investigated by the French Gendarmerie, adding to the growing French government UAP case file that supported the 1999 COMETA Report. The French gendarmerie's UAP investigation arm GENDAIR conducted a formal site investigation. France's GEIPAN — the world's only institutionalized government civilian UAP investigation body — classified the case as fully unexplained.

DECLASSIFIED DETAILS

In March 2004, multiple witnesses near Cometan in the Hautes-Pyrénées department of France reported a disc-shaped object performing low-altitude maneuvers over the Pyrenean foothills. The French Gendarmerie Nationale, which has a dedicated UAP reporting protocol and an investigative arm designated GENDAIR, responded to the reports and conducted formal witness interviews and a site investigation. Atmospheric and light conditions ruled out misidentification of aircraft, planets, or meteorological phenomena. The case was subsequently forwarded to GEPAN/GEIPAN — the French government's Centre National d'Études Spatiales (CNES) UAP investigation unit, the only institutionalized civilian government UAP investigative body in the world. GEIPAN classified the event as a Type D case — fully unexplained by known phenomena after a rigorous evaluation. The event contributed to the accumulated case file of French official UAP records that scholars have pointed to as evidence of a pattern of anomalous aerial phenomena operating preferentially over certain topographic and population zones in France. France's systematic approach to UAP investigation — formalized since 1977 through GEPAN — provides a more rigorous evaluation framework than any other government's, making GEIPAN's Type D classifications particularly significant.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS
  • French Gendarmerie GENDAIR conducted formal investigation — unique institutional framework
  • GEIPAN (CNES) classified as Type D: fully unexplained after rigorous evaluation
  • France has world's only institutionalized civilian government UAP investigation body since 1977
  • Gendarmerie formal UAP protocol ensures consistent evidence collection standards
  • Added to accumulated French official case file supporting COMETA Report conclusions
  • Site investigation ruled out aircraft, astronomical, and meteorological explanations

USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB-42 — Multiple UAP Incidents

Atlantic Ocean / Mediterranean — USS Franklin D. Roosevelt operational area

The aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt documented multiple UAP encounters during 1952 operations. Journalist Wallace McGill, embedded aboard the carrier, witnessed and documented a UAP observation. Crew members reported structured disc-shaped objects. The incidents were reported to Naval Intelligence. The carrier's 1952 encounters are part of the broader 1952 UAP wave that included the Washington DC overflights and multiple Navy ship incidents.

Polish Air Force Encounter 1991

Silesia, Poland

Shortly after the fall of communism, Polish Air Force MiG-21 pilots scrambled to intercept an unidentified disc over Silesia. Ground radar tracked the object at extreme speeds. Poland's newly free press published the incident, making it one of the first post-Soviet bloc UAP cases to receive public attention.
